About This Break

Amatecampo is an exposed, tropical beach break on El Salvador’s central Pacific coast, part of an approximately eight-kilometer stretch of black/gray-sand surf that includes El Pimental, La Zunganera and Amatecampo. Unlike El Salvador’s famous cobblestone right-hand points, this coastline offers numerous shifting sandbar peaks with both lefts and rights. Fast, short waves and small tubes are particularly attractive to intermediate surfers.

The sweet spot is roughly 2–5 ft, when Amatecampo can produce punchy shortboard surf. At 5–8 ft the currents become substantially stronger and the waves are better suited to advanced and expert surfers; above that, much of the beach tends to close out. The big advantage is space—the long beach can absorb many surfers without concentrating everyone onto one peak.
