About This Break

A notoriously powerful, shallow-water reef break delivering some of Sydney's heaviest and most spectacular barrels.

Shark Island sits just offshore from Cronulla in southern Sydney and is one of Australia's best-known heavy reef breaks. Exposed to south and southeast swell, the reef transforms incoming ocean energy into fast, hollow and extremely powerful waves breaking over a shallow rock platform.

Best known within the bodyboarding world, Shark Island has earned an international reputation for thick barrels, dramatic slabs and high-consequence surfing. When conditions align, the wave produces spectacular tubes—but there is very little margin for error.

This is an expert-level wave and should not be confused with the much more approachable beach breaks along Cronulla's shoreline.
