About This Break
Shatby, also known as El Shatby or Shatbi, is an urban surf break along the Mediterranean coastline of Alexandria, Egypt. Located near the historic center of the city, Shatby offers an unusual surfing experience where Mediterranean waves meet one of North Africa's most culturally rich coastal destinations.
Unlike Egypt's Red Sea resorts, Alexandria faces the open Mediterranean, allowing winter storms to generate surfable waves along its northern shoreline. Shatby primarily receives north and northwest wind swells, with occasional larger waves produced by strong Mediterranean low-pressure systems.
The break features predominantly sandy-bottom conditions, producing short left- and right-hand waves that vary with swell direction, wind, and sandbar formation. Smaller days can be suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers, while larger winter storms can create powerful shorebreak, strong currents, and challenging conditions.
Shatby's urban location makes it accessible to surfers living in or visiting Alexandria. The surrounding area offers waterfront promenades, historic architecture, restaurants, hotels, and the cultural attractions of Egypt's second-largest city.
