About This Break

Terrazas is the northernmost major surf break at Playa Hermosa, immediately south of Jacó on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast. Named after the Hotel Terraza del Pacífico, it differs from most of Hermosa’s shifting sandbars because the signature northern peak is influenced by a cluster of submerged rocks and rocky bottom. The result is a fast, hollow right-hander capable of producing excellent barrels, while farther south of the rocks there are additional beach-break lefts and rights. The Playa Hermosa World Surfing Reserve specifically identifies Terrazas as a fast right and one of the area's better barrel-producing waves when the swell is up.

Terrazas is a high-performance wave: quick takeoffs, immediate speed and little room for hesitation when it's firing. Its northern location, road access and proximity to hotels also make it one of Playa Hermosa's most heavily surfed peaks.

Submerged rocks • exposed rocks at lower tide • very fast takeoff • hollow barrels • strong currents • powerful surf • heavy closeouts nearby • concentrated lineup. The rocks are the defining hazard: at lower tide some become visible, while others boil beneath the surface and effectively mark the takeoff zone.
