’Perhaps you’ll find your heart’ on the shores of this secluded, somewhat isolated beach located on the Pacific in the far South of Costa Rica. If you’ve never visited Zancudo Beach perhaps now is a good time.
This is an established, well-known landmark on the beach, the Ocean waves are gentle for guests, but just down the beach is an awesome beach break and just past that, two world class point breaks; Pilon and Pavones. There are no worries about possible rip tides and it’s close to the ‘center’ of this beach community, an easy access for taxi boats to and from Golfito. The airport of Golfito has several daily flights from the International Airport in San Jose, a 20–30-minute water taxi is a nice primer of what is to come as you leave the hustle and bustle of taxis and pavement behind.
Au Coeur du soleil (in the heart of the sun) is the name of this quaint family run business with three cabinas. Owned and operated by a lovely French-Canadian Couple upon your arrival you feel at ease, palm trees and hammocks, so easy to shed those shoes, ‘earthing’ is the name of the game here.
A previous French-Canadian owner/builder and his lovely wife upgraded the structures, and the mini houses were created. To this day they have the feel and fit of a beach lifestyle resembling communities in the Caribbean. The mini cabins are ‘fun’ small and compact. The entire operation has an uplifting feel, turquoise, shells, and wood trim, comfortable and cozy, serene, tranquil, ‘the type of beach cabins that grab your attention when looking to enjoy your days in the sun’.
This beach is incredible, when the tide goes out (10.5’ tides) the beach widens up to 100 mts of black volcanic sand, if you enjoy walking on a beach here you can literally stroll 5-6 kms, often alone, and above the high tide mark it’s a beachcomber paradise, driftwood galore!
I’ve always enjoyed the early morning in Zancudo, it’s a perfect beach if you like to watch the day unfold, gentle breaking waves, pelicans skimming the surface, wingtips gently touching water. So peaceful, and unpopulated, perhaps a handful of early risers walk the beach to stay fit or nursing a hangover and looking for an electrolyte shot in the form of a Coconut.
Unlike other Pacific Coast Beaches, Zancudo Beach sits inside the Golfo Dulce, (sweet gulf) facing west, important facts for those ‘Epic Sunsets’ with the background of the Osa Peninsula. Looking toward the south, the opening to the Pacific Ocean has two of the best surfing breaks in the country positioned on either side of the gulf. Pavones is the second longest breaking left-hand wave in the world and Mata Palo is searched out for its remoteness visited by those seeking solace in authentic Jungles with crashing waves near Corcovado National Park.
The cabins are loaded with tasteful decorations, small kitchens, fans and hammocks, free beach cruisers available, a Barefoot Paradise. There is a covered ‘communal kitchen area’ in the sand and at the beach, a covered thatched hut at waters edge to shelter from the hot tropical sun.
The 3 mini-houses are fully equipped, plus, the owner’s residence has the best view of all from their second story perch. Guaranteed to think you’ve died and gone to heaven and literally just steps away from one of the most remote and uninhabited beaches in Costa Rica.
Everything is here! Complete list of furnishings, toys and tools provided upon request.
‘Nooks and Crannies’ is a phrase often used to describe small, secluded areas that are tucked away or hidden from view. It can be used to describe a beach that is not well-known or frequently visited and is perhaps a bit rough around the edges but still has a certain charm and beauty. Does that sound like the kind of beach you’re looking for? Don’t walk away with only memories, in fact don’t walk away at all, you came hoping to find a place to call home, this may be it!

Monster fish can be found just outside the gulf. Proof of this can be found from the Zancudo Lodge where over 70 IGFA records have been set.
This area is world-renowned for its inshore and offshore sportfishing action. See more on the What to Do in Playa Zancudo page.
Considered by many to be one of the best beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Zancudo is a gorgeous sand beach. It is located around 20 km south of Golfito in the Puntarenas province. The perfect location for a relaxing holiday or beach home. Playa Zancudo offers fishermen, surfers, beach lovers and their families, an area that is far from the hustle and bustle of Costa Rica’s other beaches. With unspoiled sceneries and totally natural surroundings, this beach is a haven for those who want a tranquil vacation.
The wide sandy beach of Playa Zancudo is located just a few miles north of Pavones. The beach break of Playa Zancudo can be very good! Because it is so isolated, Playa Zancudo can be surfed most times with no other surfers. Just a few miles away is Pavones, touted as the second longest left in the world. What you don’t hear is there is a second long point that rivals Pavones even closer to Playa Zancudo. There are many great things to do in Pavones.
