About This Break
Joaquina is one of Brazil’s most historic and recognizable surf breaks, located on the Atlantic side of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. The main wave at the southern end of Praia da Joaquina is a sand-bottom left-hand semi-point, where shifting sandbars interact with the rocky Costão headland to produce long, powerful lefts. Farther along the beach, shifting peaks provide additional lefts and rights. Joaquina is unusually versatile: it picks up a lot of swell, works through a broad range of tides and can range from approachable small surf to heavy, hollow double-overhead waves.
