About this break

Middle Reef is located offshore in Moro Bay near Kertasari, along the uncrowded west coast of Sumbawa. Sitting in the middle of the bay, the reef produces an A-frame with a particularly fun left and a shorter right.

Compared with the heavier waves nearby, Middle Reef has a relatively friendly takeoff and is an excellent option for progressing surfers. Confident beginners can enjoy it under smaller, appropriate conditions, while intermediates can take advantage of the open faces for turns and progression.

When the swell becomes larger, Middle Reef gains considerably more speed and power, making reef awareness and good wave selection important.

The takeoff is relatively friendly, particularly under smaller conditions, before the wave opens into a fun face suitable for turns and progression. The left generally offers the better opportunity for surfing the open face, while the right can provide a steeper takeoff before becoming softer farther down the reef.

Middle Reef becomes particularly useful when nearby Dirty Hippies is too large or powerful. As swell energy increases, Middle Reef begins working more consistently and provides an alternative for surfers who don't want the heavier barrels and shallow reef of Dirty Hippies.

For confident beginners and intermediate surfers, Middle Reef can be one of the more approachable ways to experience reef-break surfing in West Sumbawa.

Considerations

Crowds: Low

Sharp coral reef, shallow reef at lower tides, strong currents possible when the swell increases, sea urchins, tide sensitive and more powerful on larger days. Beginners should surf during smaller conditions with sufficient water over the reef and preferably with local guidance.
