Northern Rights
West Sumbawa, Indonesia
About This Break
Northern Rights is a powerful right-hand reef break that comes alive when a clean southwest groundswell reaches West Sumbawa.
The wave offers fast, punchy walls with opportunities for powerful turns, but the real attraction is what happens when the swell increases. On larger days, Northern Rights begins to tube, producing fast right-hand barrels over the reef.
The wave can hold significant size, with reported conditions ranging from shoulder-high to triple-overhead. At the upper end of that range, Northern Rights becomes an expert-level wave where experience with powerful Indonesian reef breaks is essential.
Unlike more consistent waves that tolerate imperfect conditions, Northern Rights can be particular. Swell direction, wind and tide all need to cooperate. That inconsistency is part of what keeps the lineup relatively uncrowded — but when the combination is right, Northern Rights can produce exceptional surf.
