Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the surf spots at Baleal?
Baleal is a small island joined to the mainland by a sandy isthmus just north-east of Peniche. The exposed north-facing beach picks up the most swell, while the south side of the bay — Cantinho da Baía — is sheltered and gentle. Lagide, a left-hand reef, breaks at the Peniche end of the bay, and Supertubos is a ten-minute drive south.
Is Baleal good for beginners?
Yes. The sheltered south side is one of the best places to learn to surf in Portugal, which is why most Peniche surf schools and camps are based around Baleal. Intermediate surfers head to the north side or Lagide when the swell is small, and to Supertubos when it is big.
