Praia do Tonel (Sagres)

Praia do Tonel is the signature surf beach of Sagres, sitting directly beneath the dramatic cliffs and walls of the Fortaleza de Sagres at Portugal’s southwestern tip. This exposed, west-facing beach break is one of the most reliable swell magnets around Sagres, producing shifting lefts and rights over sand. On good W–NW groundswell, Tonel becomes punchy and powerful, with steep takeoffs, fast walls and occasional hollow barrels. The better banks can handle substantial size, although big, straight swells can turn the bay into heavy closeouts.
