About This Break
Praia de Santa Bárbara, also known as Areal de Santa Bárbara, is the main surf beach on São Miguel’s north coast and one of the most reliable breaks in the Azores. Located immediately west of Ribeira Grande, this long black volcanic-sand beach break faces the open North Atlantic and produces multiple shifting lefts, rights and A-frame peaks. N–NW swell is the classic setup, with southerly winds blowing offshore. Smaller days can be forgiving and well suited to progression, while winter groundswell transforms Santa Bárbara into a fast, powerful and occasionally hollow performance wave.
