Where is Lance's Right?
Lance's Right breaks off Katiet village on the southern tip of Sipora island in the Mentawai Islands, off the west coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. Surfers reach it by fast boat or charter boat from Padang on mainland Sumatra, then stay on a boat or at one of the resorts and homestays around Katiet.
Is Lance's Right the same as HTs?
Yes. The wave is named after Lance Knight, who surfed it on a trip in the early 1990s, and it is also called HTs — short for Hollow Trees, after trees that once stood on the point. It is a fast, barrelling right over shallow reef; the inside section is known as the Surgeon's Table.
What is Lance's Left?
Lance's Left is the left-hand reef on the other side of the channel from Lance's Right. It offers longer, more open walls and is the usual alternative when the right is too big or too crowded.
When is the best season for Lance's Right?
The Mentawai dry season, roughly April to October, when Indian Ocean groundswell is most consistent and the winds are lightest. It is best from mid to high tide; the reef is very shallow at low tide.
