Outer Monkeys
CC4J+CX Sialema, South Nias Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia
About This Break
A powerful, swell-exposed right-hander delivering big open walls and long, hollow sections when the southern Telos light up.
Outer Monkeys is the outside wave of the four-break Monkeys Point complex in the southern Telo Islands. More exposed than Monkeys, Coffins and New Schools, Outer Monkeys picks up significantly more swell and comes into its own when the Indian Ocean starts producing serious energy.
Breaking over a relatively flat reef bordered by a square reef shelf, Outer Monkeys produces powerful right-hand walls with plenty of room for committed turns. On the right tide, those open faces transform into round barrel sections that can run along the reef.
This is a wave where bringing more board pays off. Outer Monkeys comfortably handles double-overhead surf and is one of the area's standout options when a substantial swell reaches the Telos.
Monkeys Point Complex
Outer Monkeys is the most exposed member of an exceptional four-wave right-hand reef system:
Monkeys — Coffins — New Schools — Outer Monkeys
Each wave has its own personality.
Monkeys is the consistent, user-friendly option.
Coffins provides fast, consequential barrels over shallow reef.
New Schools combines high-performance walls with barrel sections.
Outer Monkeys picks up the most swell, offering bigger walls, longer rides and powerful barrels.
When a good swell reaches the southern Telos, the ability to choose between four different right-hand reef breaks within the same point complex makes this an extraordinary surf destination.
Surf. Stay. Own.
