About This Break
Playa Norte is a compact, punchy surf break on the north side of Punta Hermosa, within the exceptionally wave-rich stretch that also contains El Paso, Señoritas, Caballeros, Pico Alto and La Isla. The main surfing peak is at the northern end of the beach, where swell interacts with a mixed boulder-and-sand bottom to produce a predominantly right-hand wave. Depending on seasonal sand movement, it can behave like a beach break, rocky reef or short point-style setup.
The defining right is short, fast, hollow and powerful, making Playa Norte especially popular with shortboarders and bodyboarders. The beach changes considerably through the year: Punta Hermosa municipal information notes that winter currents remove much of the sand and expose rocks, while sand begins returning around November and December.
