About This Break

Playgrounds is a remote, high-performance cobblestone reef break on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast near Veracruz de Acayo, north of the main Popoyo surf zone. Often compared to a warm-water Lower Trestles, it produces beautifully shaped split peaks with long, rippable lefts and shorter, punchier rights. The left is the signature wave, offering big shoulders, smooth carving sections and a fast inside, while the right tends to be steeper, shallower and more likely to barrel. Playgrounds starts becoming fun around chest-high and can hold up to double-overhead, with S–SW groundswell and Nicaragua’s NE offshore winds creating the classic setup.

Its remote location is a huge part of the appeal. Access is primarily by boat, helping keep crowds considerably lighter than Popoyo, Santana and Colorado. When the swell is moderate and the morning offshore is blowing, Playgrounds can deliver exactly what its name promises: long walls, ramps, barrels and an enormous amount of room for turns.

For surfers looking to buy, sell or invest around Playgrounds, Popoyo and Nicaragua’s Pacific surf coast, International Surf Properties connects the global surf community with real estate in the places surfers want to live.
