About This Break
Gavilán is a mellow, rock-influenced surf break at Playa Gavilán near El Astillero, on Nicaragua's Pacific coast north of Popoyo. The defining wave breaks off a rock and produces a relatively soft, forgiving face at smaller sizes, making it especially attractive to longboarders and progressing surfers.
Gavilán changes personality as swell increases. Small Gavilán as genuinely beginner-friendly, but says the wave becomes faster and steeper once it moves beyond roughly chest high. The wave is predominantly left-breaking, with occasional rights appearing on larger days.
