About This Break
Santa María is a fun and accessible beach break on the southern Lima surf corridor, about 55 km south of the city. The break sits toward the northern end of Playa Santa María at the base of the cliffs, producing short, fast peaks over a sandy bottom. It is predominantly known for its rights, but shifting sandbars and swell direction regularly produce lefts as well. Smaller conditions can create surprisingly hollow sections because of the shallow sand bottom, while larger swells give the break considerably more punch.

Santa María's sand bottom is more forgiving than many of the rocky reef and point breaks nearby, but the ocean itself deserves respect. Local descriptions specifically note changing currents and unpredictable power, and the shallow beach can make smaller waves surprisingly hollow. Sandbars also move, so the best peak may change considerably from one season or major swell to another.
