Where is Las Gatas?

About This Break
Tucked away at the southern entrance to beautiful Zihuatanejo Bay, Las Gatas is one of Guerrero's most intriguing and elusive surf breaks. Known for its tropical surroundings, crystal-clear water, and rocky reef, this secluded surf spot can produce exceptional left-hand waves when powerful Pacific groundswells wrap into the bay.
Unlike the more consistent surf destinations of nearby Troncones and La Saladita, Las Gatas requires a substantial south or southwest swell to come alive. When conditions align, the reef produces long, peeling lefts with smooth open faces, fast sections, and occasional hollow barrels. On exceptional days, rides can extend several hundred meters, creating an unforgettable surfing experience in one of Mexico's most picturesque coastal settings.
The wave breaks along the rocky outer edge of Playa Las Gatas, a sheltered beach famous for snorkeling, seafood restaurants, and calm turquoise waters. While the protected swimming area is popular with families, the outer reef is a different experience entirely, attracting experienced surfers seeking a quality wave away from the region's more frequently surfed breaks.
Accessible by boat from Zihuatanejo or by a coastal walking trail from Playa La Ropa, Las Gatas combines the adventure of discovering a secluded surf break with the charm of a traditional Mexican fishing town.
