About This Break
Punta Ballenas is a quality left-hand reef and point break located just south of Máncora on Peru’s wave-rich northern coast. More exposed than some of the surrounding breaks, Punta Ballenas picks up plenty of swell and can produce clean, powerful left-hand walls when conditions come together. The break responds particularly well to groundswells from the northwest, with southeast winds providing the cleanest conditions.
The wave offers both a left-hand reef section and a left point, giving surfers opportunities for longer, performance-oriented rides. Mid tide on a rising tide is generally the preferred window. Compared with the main Máncora break, Punta Ballenas can also offer a less crowded experience, adding to its appeal for experienced surfers looking for quality waves close to town. The rocky reef and presence of sea urchins require awareness, particularly at lower water levels.
