About This Break
Punta Chipehua is a remote right-hand point/beach-break setup on Oaxaca’s Isthmus of Tehuantepec coast, near the fishing community of Santa Gertrudis Miramar. Chipehua is visually extraordinary: enormous coastal sand dunes descend directly toward the Pacific, creating one of the more unusual surf landscapes in southern Mexico. The surf area combines sand-bottom peaks with waves shaped by the point and coastal contours.
The break favors southerly Pacific swell, with the better setups producing long, clean right-hand walls along the point and shorter peaks elsewhere along Playa Chipehua. Its location well east of Huatulco means it receives far less surf traffic than Puerto Escondido and Oaxaca’s established surf corridors.
For surfers looking to buy, sell or invest along the Oaxaca coast, International Surf Properties connects the global surf community with real estate in the places surfers want to live.
Spot Characteristics
Local Knowledge
Low
Remote location • strong currents • shifting sandbars • limited rescue/surf infrastructure • powerful swell when large • extreme seasonal winds in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The last point is especially important here: the region is famous for powerful Tehuano winds, which can overwhelm otherwise favorable swell conditions.
