Backyards Playa Hermosa
Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica
About This Break
Backyards is one of the marquee peaks at Playa Hermosa on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast, just south of Jacó. This is a powerful, black-sand beach break / sandbar known for steep, hollow lefts and rights that break relatively close to shore. It is one of Hermosa’s most consistent sandbars, with powerful waves and barrels in both directions; mid-to-high incoming tide and SW–W swell are the classic recipe.
Backyards is not the mellow Costa Rican beginner wave people sometimes picture. Playa Hermosa is famous for heavy beach-break surf, strong currents and rapidly changing conditions, and Backyards is one of its premier high-performance banks. It has also been a focal point for Costa Rican surf competitions and the local performance-surfing scene.
