Bird Lookout
About This Break
Bird Lookout is an exposed beach break on the Dominican Republic’s Amber Coast, west of Sosúa and within easy reach of Puerto Plata. Unlike the reef-dominated breaks around nearby Encuentro, Bird Lookout is primarily a beach break, producing both left- and right-hand peaks from a mixture of local windswell and North Atlantic groundswell. Northeast swell is the preferred direction, particularly when paired with south-southwest offshore winds. The break is fairly consistent and offers warm-water surfing in a much less internationally recognized setting than the Cabarete/Encuentro surf corridor.
Spot Characteristics
Local Knowledge
Moderate / Sometimes Crowded
Sea urchins, rocks, coral and shark encounters are the hazards specifically identified by the surf guide. Because it's an exposed north-coast break, conditions can also become choppy quickly when the prevailing wind turns onshore. Surf-Forecast identifies SSW as the ideal offshore wind, so early sessions or favorable wind windows can matter considerably.
