About This Break
Punta Encomienda is an exposed and remarkably consistent sandbar break on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast, northwest of Puerto Escondido and near the Chacahua coastal zone. Unlike Oaxaca’s better-known right-hand points, Punta Encomienda produces powerful lefts and rights over sand. Surf-Forecast rates the break 4/5, calls it very consistent, and identifies clean southerly groundswell with northerly offshore wind as the optimum setup.
The wave is known for steep drops, considerable power, hollow sections and maneuverable ramps. WannaSurf describes rides generally under 150 meters, with the wave beginning to work below 3 feet and holding 8 feet+, and considers it a wave for experienced surfers.
