About This Break

A consistent black-sand beach break just outside Santa Catalina, offering approachable lefts and rights for beginners while still producing plenty of size and power when Pacific swells arrive.

Playa El Estero is one of the most accessible and versatile surf breaks in the Santa Catalina area. Located roughly 2 km east of central Santa Catalina, El Estero is a long, broad black-sand beach with a predominantly sandy bottom and multiple peaks that produce both left- and right-breaking waves. Unlike the powerful reef and point breaks that made Santa Catalina internationally famous, El Estero offers a more forgiving environment, making it especially popular with beginner and intermediate surfers.

The beach stretches for approximately 1.5 km, with a river at one end and rocky reef terrain toward the other. Because the peaks shift with the sand and swell, surfers can usually spread out along the beach rather than concentrating on one takeoff zone. Mondo rates El Estero as very consistent, with surfable conditions more than 150 days per year, and describes it as a regional classic with relatively few surfers compared with Santa Catalina's primary point break.

The Surf

El Estero works on a wide range of conditions and can change character dramatically depending on swell size and tide. On smaller days, its sandy-bottom peaks offer gentle, rolling walls well suited to surf lessons, longboards and developing surfers. With stronger Pacific swell, the beach can become considerably more powerful, producing faster and larger lefts and rights with stronger currents and more challenging paddle-outs.
