Punta Brava

Punta Brava is one of the more powerful and challenging surf breaks around Santa Catalina. Set on a small rocky stretch of coastline south of town, the break offers both lefts and rights over a boulder-and-rock bottom. The right can work on smaller swells and produce hollow sections, while the more prominent left comes alive with larger swell and can deliver fast, powerful rides. Mondo rates the wave as world class and describes it as very consistent, while Surf-Forecast also rates Punta Brava as a very consistent exposed reef break.

This is a significant step up from the more approachable waves at Playa El Estero. Punta Brava's rocky bottom, power, difficult entry and exit, and challenging paddle make it much better suited to capable intermediate and advanced surfers. Another Santa Catalina surf guide specifically describes the left as challenging for experienced surfers and notes that the break can handle more swell than Santa Catalina Point.

World Class

Punta Brava has the ingredients of a high-quality reef setup: strong exposure to southern swell, powerful waves, hollow potential and relatively light crowds. The right tends to perform on smaller swell, while the left becomes faster and more serious once the swell builds. Mondo lists typical rides as relatively short—generally under 50 meters—so the attraction is more about power and intensity than exceptionally long rides.
