Playa Amarillo

Playa Amarillo is a beautiful, largely undeveloped beach break immediately north of the fishing village of Playa Gigante on Nicaragua’s Tola coast. Its main setup consists of shifting sand-bottom peaks producing both lefts and rights, with generally mellower, more approachable surf than nearby Playa Colorado. On smaller swells, Amarillo can be friendly enough for beginners and longboarders; as the swell builds, the same sandbars can become fast, powerful and hollow, producing legitimate barrel sections.

There is also a separate shallow reef setup at the southern end of the beach. That reef can produce hollow lefts and rights when the swell size and direction align, but it is much less consistent than the primary beach break.
