Lance's Left (El Penon)

El Peñón, widely known among visiting surfers as Lances Left, is a long left-hand point/reef break just outside the fishing village of El Astillero on Nicaragua's Pacific coast. When enough groundswell wraps around the prominent rocky headland, the wave can produce exceptionally long, relatively open-faced lefts. Local surf guides report rides approaching 500 meters when the point is properly connected, putting it among the longest potential rides in the Popoyo surf zone.

Unlike the punchier beach break at El Astillero itself, El Peñón is a swell-dependent point wave. On moderate conditions it can be relatively mellow and forgiving; with significant swell, the rocky reef, currents and sheer length of the wave make it much more demanding. Access by boat is common, although surfers can walk from Astillero at suitable tides.
