Outer Reef (Popoyo)

Outer Reef is the heavy-water proving ground of Popoyo and one of the few legitimate big-wave reef breaks in Central America. Sitting several hundred meters offshore from the main Popoyo reef, the break remains relatively dormant until a substantial long-period S–SW groundswell arrives. Then the outer reef transforms into a powerful, thick left-hand slab, with a critical drop, huge open face and cavernous barrel unloading over an extremely shallow rock reef. It is one of Central America’s best and few true big-wave locations.

This is absolutely not a progression wave. The shallow reef can appear beneath surfers during the drop, currents become serious at size, and strong offshore winds can make entry into the wave difficult. The combination of consequence, isolation and sheer wave power keeps crowds remarkably light even when it's firing.
