About This Break

Playa Santana, more formally known as Playa Jiquiliste/Jiquelite, is a punchy, highly consistent beach break on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast in the Tola/Popoyo surf zone. A lava-rock shelf at the southern end refracts incoming S–SW swell into several wedging A-frame peaks, producing fast lefts and rights, rippable walls and hollow barrels. The main First and Second Peaks are generally the best—and busiest—while additional shifting sandbars spread surfers farther north. Mid-to-high tide is the sweet spot, and Nicaragua’s famous E–NE offshore winds frequently groom the lineup into clean, glassy surf. Smaller days can be approachable for progressing surfers, but once Santana gets into the 4 ft+ range it becomes fast, powerful and considerably better suited to experienced surfers.

For surfers interested in buying, selling or investing around Playa Santana, Popoyo and Nicaragua's rapidly developing Emerald Coast, International Surf Properties connects the global surf community with real estate in the places surfers want to live.

Local Knowledge

Crowds

Moderate

Strong rip currents; fast shorebreak; shallow sandbars at lower tide; scattered flat rocks/boulders; powerful closeouts on larger swells; and competitive crowds around the best peaks. A river empties near the main surf zone and helps replenish the sandbars, but after significant rain it can also discharge dirty runoff, debris and branches into the lineup. Keep valuables off the beach as local surf guides also flag petty theft as a concern.
